Latest magazine cover image

Posted on January 13, 2016 by Darren under Uncategorized

It’s been a manic end to 2015, which has seen no updates to my blog, for which I am sorry. 2016 has however started with a manic few weeks too, so I’ve so much to update on! To start with, here’s my latest magazine cover image of The Shuttleworth Collection DH-88 Comet on the front of Pilot.

Sunset for mid-summer

Posted on June 27, 2015 by Darren under Commercial Photography

Whilst covering the mid-summers eve concert in The Shuttleworth Collection’s Swiss Garden, there was the most wonderful sunset. I popped around to the front of the cottage to grab this shot. I didn’t have a tripod, and only had my 580EX II flashgun, so it wasn’t easy to get the shot.

Family portraits in Norfolk

Posted on May 19, 2015 by Darren under Recent portrait sessions

Despite being based in Bedfordshire, I travel a lot to do my work, and it’s not just aviation and commercial jobs that see me travelling. I spend a weekend up in Norfolk the other week to capture a range a family portraits for a family who were celebrating a parents birthday. I had four groups of families to photograph, each of whom had a different set of characters. It’s was a great session of photography with so many options to play with. 🙂

A challenge!

Posted on by Darren under Aircraft

I’ve shot a lot of air-to-air images in my time, but none have been as challenging as my shoot a few weeks back! I was tasked with photographing an RAF Hawk trainer, alongside a WWI Bristol F2b Fighter from The Shuttleworth Collection. The problem is that, the Bristol Fighter fly’s at a maximum speed of around 85mph, and the Hawk has a minimum speed of 140mph with the gear and flaps down. This means that the only way to get both in the same shot, is to have the Hawk do a fly by. In normal circumstances, I would use a fast shutter speed to ‘Freeze’ the Hawk as it flew past. However.. a fast shutter speed will freeze the propeller on the F2b, so I had to find a happy medium, that allowed a bit of prop movement, but also kept the Hawk from blurring as it flew past. I’m happy that it worked out, as there was a lot of planning involved and some great flying by all the pilots involved. 🙂
